Project | 01 | The final goodbye
In my first year of taking journalism, design led me to be stressed. I wasn't sure how to get the perfect deign. but it was something I wanted to work on to better my skills. Who knew design would be one of my favorite aspects of journalism. For the senior edition in 2019, which was the last issue we produced my first year on staff, I wanted to give the seniors an issue they would remember. Most of the senior edition contains alternative copy work, so we had more freedom for creating designs. I was assigned the task of page 16, seniors favorite memories throughout the past four years. After looking for inspiration and talking with my adviser, I worked on creating a tack board. By using photoshop, I made cut-outs of photos and sticky notes of seniors. This design taught me how to use photoshop and branch out of my comfort zone while creating a design.

Project | 02 | Speak up against inappropriate power
After working on this in depth story about people holding positions of power inappropriately approaching minors, my adviser and I decided the story needed to go in the next issue of the newspaper: the 2020 February issue. With this powerful story, a powerful designs was needed to bring readers to the story. Since this was a long story, I decided to use the centerpiece along with the page before it to create this design. To choose a focus color of the story, I knew it needed to be influential just like the story; red really stood out and I knew it would draw readers in along with black and white to add contrast. I asked a good friend on staff to draw up an illustration for the story to also catch the readers' eyes. To add some contrast to the design, I placed the subhead over the headline. As a large fan of clean-cut designs, I added a pull quote to the story with red text. I was very proud of how this design turned out, along with the story. I learned finding good inspiration for a design will help things turn out better. I used a design I found as inspiration when it came to the subhead overlapping the headline.

Project | 03 | 2021 November Cover
For the first issue of the 2021 school year, we knew most would relate to the struggle students face due to virtual schooling, which we were still enduring at that time. In this issue of the newspaper, two staff members wrote a pro/con article about returning back to school face-to-face. I always want our covers to reflect on something we write about in that issue, which is what took place here. I had one of the editors, Justice Seay, set up her camera to reflect on a teams meeting taking place. After taking the picture, I wanted a clean-cut, minimalist design done for the cover, which is what I designed here. Designing covers is one of my favorite designs to do because it's the first thing people see when receiving a newspaper.

Project | 04 | Falls sports cross finish line
In order to put a focus on the pictures, I created a grid look from some inspiration I found; this draws the readers eye to the photos. In order for the color scheme to work, I grabbed the color from the swimmer's cap for the sidebar. The publication staff and I find it important to include voices in all pages of the newspaper, except the cover; I had staff members interview student athletes from each sport to include on this page. Using different font sizes allowed for some contrast, while also separating the different text ideas.

Project | 05 | 2021 December Cover
The two main focuses of this particular issue were Covid-19 and the holidays, including Christmas. I had Justice Seay, and editor, take a photo of a friend with a Santa hat and mask to pull these story ideas together. I continued with the white headline across the top of the page to really draw in the readers focus. By adding in a few teasers, I highlighted certain pages in the newspaper to really grasp the reader. Overall, I'm proud of how this cover turned out and super proud of Seay for capturing this breathtaking photo.

Project | 06 | The new "normal"
To grab the readers' eyes, I picked out brighter colors. I created multiple informational graphics using Canva to back up the story, all fitting into the color scheme. The pull quote broke up the text a bit, while providing a hard-hitting quote. Seeing this in print was an "awe" moment because it turned out very well.

Project | 07 | Techno increase
In order to fit all the ads sold for this issue, I created a sidebar of ads and placed my informational graphic to the right of the ads to add some separation to the story. To show this was a harder-hitting story, I increased the width of the column guides, which pulled this design together very nicely.

Project | 08 | 2021 February Sports
With only about a couple hours left and a few other pages to edit, the sports page needed quite the redesign. Before fixing up the page, the "Stunting seniors" photo slideshow took up the whole page, except for the sidebar. A few days prior, winter sports resumed, so we wanted to add this to the page. After using page leader Lauren Devereux's online story for the page, I collected photos yearbook staff members took to add a column with a caption. Before adding in the "Winter sports resume" story and photos, the "Stunting seniors" needed to sized down significantly, which was a tasked completely in a few minutes. This design proved I complete quick design edits, while also making them look good.

Project | 09 | Eagle's Info
Because of a larger amount of story ideas, it was best to combine the table of contents—which was on a separate page—with the letter from the editors, how to follow us and our editorial policy. This blue added a happy tone to this page, while also giving a clean-looking design; I created an "L" shape with the table of contents, staff, contact info and editorial policy to add alignment. To separate the "Follow us" box from the "Letter from the editors," I added a stroke line with the same blue used in the sidebars. Since my Co-Editor-in-Chief and I don't attend school on the same days, a photo collage was created with pictures of us to add pictures to the story. Due to the alignment and color, this page pulled together very nicely.
